Reactive Amygdala > Trauma > Hippocampus: Along with experiencing our reactive amygdala part of the brain, switching off becoming left brain dominant, the hippocampus works to remember and make sense of traumatic experiences, and is responsible for memory and differentiating between the past and present. With consistent exposure to trauma the hippocampus shrinks. Like many parts of the brain’s limbic system, the hippocampus is involved in memory, learning, and emotion. Its largest job is to hold short-term memories and transfer them to long-term storage in our brains. It also plays a role in emotional processing, including anxiety and avoidance behaviors. Like old files on our internal hard drive, trauma needs to be processed and healed.
